Parliamentary elections in Ethiopia in 1987

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1987 parliamentary elections in the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia were the only elections in the history of the Ethiopian DPR .

Ethiopia held elections (with only one party) for the 835 seats of the Ethiopian Parliament ( Shengo ) on June 14, 1987. This was the first election since the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie was deposed in the Ethiopian Revolution of 1974, at the same time it was also the first election under the constitution of the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia , which established the People's Republic of Ethiopia.

background

The new Ethiopian constitution, adopted by a referendum held on February 1, 1987, formally designated the national parliament (the Shengo ) as the highest body of state power. The date of the parliamentary elections was announced just two days later. In the election for the Shengo's 835 seats, 2,500 candidates were nominated, mostly by the ruling Marxist-Leninist Workers' Party of Ethiopia .

Of the total of around 15,700,000 voters, 13,400,000 officially cast their votes, which corresponds to a turnout of around 85%. However, the official turnout was 90.5%. This result is viewed as an effort to end Lt. To legitimize Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam , who headed a military government council ( Dergue ) until 1987 . Although the Derg was instructed to relinquish power on the same date as the proclamation of the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (February 22, 1987), it refused to do so until September 1987, long after the election.

Mengistu Haile Mariam was also elected President of the Republic on September 10, 1987 by the National Assembly.
