Election to the Constituent Assembly of Ethiopia in 1994
The 1994 elections to the Constituent Assembly of Ethiopia were the only elections in Ethiopia's history in which representatives were elected to draft a national constitution, later the constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia .
The elections took place on June 5, 1994, in the transition period, and were the first elections since the abolition of the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia . No referendum, as in 1987, was held after the constitution was adopted at the end of 1994.
Results
The Constituent Assembly was composed of 547 elected deputies. The election was won by the Revolutionary Democratic Front of the Ethiopian Peoples , which won 484 seats. This coalition of parties overthrew the communist regime under Mengistu Haile Mariam in May 1991. In the meantime, however, numerous opposition parties have boycotted the votes; other political parties only received 63 seats. The coalition was led by the President and later Prime Minister Meles Zenawi .
