United Ethiopian Democratic Forces

The United Ethiopian Democratic Forces ( Amharic የኢትዮጵያ ዴሞክራሲያዊ ኃይሎቸ ሕብረት transcribed ya-ītyōṗṗyā Demokrasiyawi Hayločä Hibrät shortly Hibrät ; English as "United Ethiopian Democratic Forces" ; abbreviated UEDF) are a coalition of parties in Ethiopia who are ahead of the 2005 parliamentary elections formed.

The UEDF advocates further federalization of the country and is particularly close to the Oromo ethnic group .

Parties

The founding members and most important parties in this alliance are the Oromo People's Congress (OPC), the Ethiopian Social Democratic Federal Party (ESDFP), the Democratic Alliance of the Peoples of South Ethiopia (SEPDC), the All-Amhara People's Organization (AAPO) and the Ethiopian Democratic Unity Party (EDUP).

In addition, the Afar Revolutionary Democratic United Front (ARDUF / Uguugumo), the Ethiopian Democratic Union - Tehadiso (EDU Tehadiso), the All- Ethiopian Socialist Movement (MEISON), the Ethiopian National United Front (ENUF), the Ethiopian People Federal Democratic Unity Party ( HIBREHIZB), the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party (IHAPA), the Gambela People's United Democratic Front (GPUDF), the Oromo People's Liberation Organization (OPLO - IBSO) and the Tigrean Alliance for Democracy (TAND) joined the coalition.

In the parliamentary elections on May 15, 2005, the UEDF won 52 seats in the House of Representatives . Of these, 40 seats are in the Oromia region and 12 in the region of the southern nations, nationalities and peoples .

In October 2005, the UEDF temporarily supported the other major opposition party alliance, the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD or Qinijit), in refusing to join the People's House of Representatives until all demands were followed up. At the last moment, the then party chairman, Dr. Merera Gudina and his deputy Beyene Petros announced that the UEDF would join the council after they were ousted by the party's central committee. At present (June 2006) the party alliance is led by the deputy chairman Girma Schumie and the general secretary of the party Dereje Kebede . Spokesman of the party is the representative of West Shewa - Zone in Oromia, Geberu Mariam Uturu .
