The Afar Revolutionary Democratic United Front ( Afar : ´Qafar Uguugumoh Demokrasiyyoh Inkiinoh Fooca (abbreviation Uguugumo ), also known as Uguguma or Ugogomo ; Amharic ኢትዮጵያ ማህበረ-ዴሞክራሲ ፌደራላዊ ፓርቲ ; English Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front , abbreviated ARDUF ) is armed Opposition group and also a legal political party in the Afar region , an ethnically based region in Ethiopia .

ideology

The Uguugumo is committed to the self-determination of the Afar and is in constant negotiations with the Ethiopian government. The party is also committed to unifying the Afar from Ethiopia, Djibouti and Eritrea and therefore does not recognize Eritrea's independence.

The political party aims to unite all Afar under one flag. Although the nature of the enforcement and the aim were not clear in the past (the reunification of Ethiopia and Eritrea and the Afar-inhabited regions in Djibouti or an independent Afar state), the party claimed in 1998 that they had all Afar territories under an autonomous federal state within Ethiopia - similar to the Afar region of Ethiopia that has existed since 1996 . However, it also wants to add the Afar populated regions in Eritrea and Djibouti to this region. As a consequence, the Uguugumo do not recognize Eritrea's independence, which was achieved in 1993.

history

The Uguugumo movement was founded in March 1993 as an alliance of three Afar organizations: the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Union (ARDUU) founded by Mohamooda Gaas in 1991 , the Afar Ummatah Demokrasiyyoh Focca (AUDF) and the revolutionaries forces from Afar ( Afar Revolutionary forces , ARF). Mohamooda Gaas was elected its general secretary in 1995, but refused to take office and left the office to the vice-chairman Muhyadin Mafatah , who moved from Djibouti to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa in August 1996 . He was imprisoned in Djibouti during the civil war with two other Afar leaders ( Habib Mahammad Yayyo and Jamal Abdulkadir Redo ).

In 1999, the ruling Revolutionary Democratic Front of the Ethiopian Peoples, made up of Uguugumo members and the amalgamation of other Afar organizations, founded the National Democratic Party of the Afar , which currently governs the Afar region .

In July 2003 the party finally became a member of the United Ethiopian Democratic Forces , which together won 52 of the 527 seats in the People's House of Representatives (First Chamber of the Ethiopian Parliament ) in the Ethiopian parliamentary election on May 15, 2005 .
