List of political parties in Ethiopia

Political parties in Ethiopia only existed de facto since 1984, before various liberation and resistance organizations existed.

From 1889 to 1974 the emperors Menelik II , Iyasu V , the Empress Zauditu and Emperor Haile Selassie I ruled in Ethiopia . In the years 1936 to 1941 there was an interruption due to the occupation of the Italians. Here Ethiopia suffered from the atrocities of the fascist party . After that, political parties were not allowed in the Abyssinian Empire . From 1974 to 1984 the military ruled until 1991 Ethiopia was a one-party state with the Workers' Party of Ethiopia ( Worker's Party of Ethiopia , shortcuts WPE) and Unity Party, opposition parties could only exist underground or in exile.

After the fall of the Mengistu regime , there was a transitional government with a provisional parliament until the elections for the constituent constitution on June 5, 1994 . The first real elections took place on May 7th, June 18th and June 28th 1995. The first members of the House of Representatives ( Parlama for short ) were elected. Since then there have been elections in 2000 , 2005 and 2010 . The Bundeshaus , whose deputies are representatives of the regions , was elected in 2000 and 2005.
