Political parties in Benin
This article provides an overview of Benin's political parties . The West African state of Benin has a multi-party system . According to the Federal Foreign Office , political parties in Benin only play a subordinate role in comparison with individual personalities and ethnic or regional domestic powers .
In 2005, a study by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung mentions 150 political parties in Benin, none of which are really represented nationwide. However, there is a noticeable trend towards the merging of parties into electoral alliances, with the result that the number of parties in the national parliament has halved from 24 in 1991 to 12 today.
From 1961 to 1963 the Rassemblement Démocratique du Dahomé was the only party in the then Republic of Dahomey - and from 1975 to 1990 the People's Revolutionary Party of Benin was the unity party in the People's Republic of Benin .
