Rassemblement Démocratique du Dahomé

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rassemblement Démocratique du Dahomé ( German  Democratic Collection of Dahomey ) was a nationalist party in the Republic of Dahomey (today Benin ). It was founded and directed by Hubert Maga .

It was a regional party, like most of the parties in Dahomey, and was heavily supported by the northern part of the French colony . The Bariba in particular were seen as the party's electoral base. In the remaining regions of Benin, the party was rather unpopular. With this party Maga ran for the renewal of his mandate on January 2, 1956 in the parliamentary elections. Advocating “active federalism within the French Union ”, he won 60,601 of the 179,119 votes, compared with 64,344 for Apithy .

From 1961 to 1963 it was the only political party in Dahomey. After the fall of Maga in 1963, the RDD was pushed into the opposition. In 1965 General Christophe Soglo's party political activities were banned.

In 1970 democracy and political activities were restored in Dahomey. Hubert Maga became chairman of the executive committee.
