Pino Minafra
Pino Minafra (born July 21, 1951 in Ruvo di Puglia ) is an Italian jazz trumpeter , flugelhorn player and composer . He belongs “to the top class of European trumpeters” and “impresses with his creative playing and unbelievable wide sound lines supported by circular breathing”.
Live and act
Pino Minafra studied with Nino Rota at the Bari Conservatory . He became known in the Italian jazz scene in the 1980s for his participation in bands such as Nexus ( Night Riding , 1985); he also played with Mario Schiano and Gianluigi Trovesi . While his early, in the 1980s for the label Splasc (h) captured albums at a relatively conventional neo-bop jazz moving -Idiom, located Minafra opened in the 1990s, to free improvisation and the Italian Jazz - avant-garde .
Among his most notable works is Sudori , recorded in 1995 , in which Giorgio Occhipinti , Carlo Actis Dato , Lauro Rossi , Daniele Patrumi and Vincenze Mazzone participated. In 2000 the album Canto Libero was created with his Banlieues Blues Quartet .
At the same time, Minafra works with his Sud Ensemble , with whom he recorded the album Terronia for Enja and which includes, in addition to Dato, Rossi and Mazzone, the saxophonist Sandro Satta , the pianist Livio Minafra and the bassist Giovanni Maier . With this band he toured several times in Central Europe. In the orchestra Minafra combines the southern banda music with jazz elements of blues, free jazz , Dixieland and hard bop . “It's music full of sharp contrasts that is constantly changing into something else. It's a southern sound that refers to the real as well as an imaginary south, «says Pino Minafra himself, who also lists opera arias, pop and rock music as components of his wild mix.
During his performances, Minafra sometimes plays the trumpet through a megaphone , also the didgeridoo and sings scat .
Minafra, who also plays in the banda of his hometown at events such as the processions of Holy Week, hosts a festival of international contemporary jazz there, which - because there is no entrance fee - takes place with the participation of the entire city. With Willem Breuker and Michel Godard he also performed his compositions with the Banda (for example at the Donaueschinger Musiktage ). In 1990 he gave the impetus to found the Italian Unabile Orchestra , which is run as a collective band project. Minafra also worked with Giorgio Gaslini on his big band production Masks in 1990/91 and on record projects with Han Bennink and Ernst Reijseger ( Noci ... Strani Fritti , 1990 on Leo ) and Michel Godard ( Castel Del Monte , 1998).
Minafra works as a trumpet teacher at the Bari Conservatory. He is married to the harpsichordist Margherita Porfido (* 1956). With his son, the pianist Livio Minafra (* 1982), he founded the MinAfric Orchestra in 2007 .
