Michael "Mike" Goetz (born February 25, 1956 in Unterseen ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( pianist , arranger , composer ) and producer .

Life

Goetz grew up in Bern , where he also received his musical training at the city conservatory and the Swiss Jazz School . From a very early age he played in jazz bands with schoolmates and was able to perform regularly before his twentieth birthday. He earned his spurs with numerous, sometimes well-known regional and national amateur orchestras, before his collaboration with renowned jazz greats such as the Dutch cornetist Bert de Kort ( Dutch Swing College Band ) and the ex-Basie alto saxophonist Earle Warren enabled him to make the leap into the professional camp . Goetz mainly works as a soloist, but also leads his own bands (best known is his "All Star Sextet") and participates in numerous touring and recording projects. Goetz lives in Burgdorf BE .

In addition to his concert activities, he is also active in music education - for example as the founder and director of the internationally recognized Traditional Jazz Workshop in Lenk (since 1995) or as a guest lecturer at various music schools. He runs his own record label ( Downtown Records ).

style

Goetz prefers the Harlem Stride Piano as a soloist ; But he is active - especially as a band musician - in a wide range of jazz between Dixieland and hard bop . Goetz names James P. Johnson and Fats Waller as sources of inspiration , but also Nat King Cole , Hank Jones and the Swiss Henri Chaix .

Works

Goetz is the author of a number of piano compositions, mostly in the ragtime and stride piano style , but has also written pieces for combos. His most frequently played number is "Blues for the Crusaders", written together with the drummer Charly Antolini .

Awards

The CD "Mike Goetz Quartet: Swingin 'after midnight" was voted into the Golden Apéro Dozen of the Swiss Radio DRS in 2000.
