Adler ( Russian Адлер ) is a place on the Russian Black Sea coast , on the western foothills of the Caucasus, right on the border with Georgia and Abkhazia . Administratively, Adler has been part of the Sochi district since 1961 and forms one of its four Rajons (Adlerski rajon) with the surrounding area . The population of the Rajon rose sharply to almost 150,000 after around 2010, more than two thirds of them in the urban area (as of 2018).

The Russian Empire founded a fortress on June 18, 1837 with the name (Krepost) Svjatowo Ducha, translated (fortress) of the Holy Spirit . However, the area was settled long before the Russians arrived. During the Middle Ages Liesh , a village inhabited by Sadz - Abkhazians, was located here . In the 13th century, Genoese merchants set up a manufacturing facility known as Layso. At that time the hinterland was controlled by the Sadz princes of Aredba ; one of their headquarters was located within today's district boundaries. The name the city bears today comes from the time of the Ottoman Empire , when the place was called Artlar or Artı .

A first settlement with this name was founded in 1869 on the place of the Cape "Adler". From this settlement a larger settlement developed by 1915 with a customs station, agencies of various steamship companies and over 100 shops. The mild climate, the hilly landscape with subtropical vegetation and the occurrence of healing mud ensured that Adler developed as a health resort during the Soviet era . In 1934 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement .

In 1961, the Adler Rajon was incorporated into the district of Sochi, about 30 km further north. At that time it had about 20,000 inhabitants (1959: 19,658).

2014 Winter Olympics

Adler was the main venue for the 2014 Winter Olympics . In a short time, the Olympic Stadium and four other halls for the ice sports competitions and the opening and closing ceremonies were built on a roundabout near the sea. In addition, there were extensive renovations and expansions of the traffic routing as well as new residential complexes, which largely gave Adler a new face.
