Election to the National Assembly for Wales 1999
The 1999 National Assembly election for Wales was the first election to the newly established National Assembly in Cardiff and took place on May 6, 1999 . 60 MPs were elected, 40 of them in constituencies with relative majority voting and 20 through party lists in 5 regions. After the Labor Party narrowly missed an absolute majority, Labor initially formed a minority government . The Labor Party's top candidate, Alun Michael , became First Secretary on May 12, 1999, and thus chairman of the regional government. After Alun Michael's resignation in February 2000, the newly elected First Minister Rhodri Morgan formed a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats in October 2000.
