Alun Michael (born August 22, 1943 in Bryngwran , Anglesey (Ynys Môn), Wales ) is a Welsh politician . He has been the Police and Crime Commissioner of South Wales since November 2012.

Life

After studying at Keele University , he worked as a youth and social worker between 1971 and 1987 . Michael began his political career as a candidate for the Labor Party in 1973 when he was elected a member of the City Councilor of Cardiff , of which he was a member until 1989. He is also a member of the Co-operative Party .

In the 1987 elections he was elected for the first time as the successor to former Prime Minister James Callaghan as a member of the House of Commons and has since represented the constituency of Cardiff South and Penarth there . During this time he was first between 1987 and 1988 Parliamentary Secretary Whip of the Labor Party in the House of Commons and at the same time from 1987 to 1992 spokesman for the opposition for Welsh affairs. Subsequently, from 1992 to 1997 he was domestic affairs spokesman for the Labor Party.

After the Labor Party's victory in the 1997 general election , he was first Deputy Home Secretary. In October 1998 Prime Minister Tony Blair appointed him to succeed Ron Davies as Secretary of State for Wales as part of a government reshuffle. He held this office until he was replaced by Paul Murphy in July 1999.

In the first election to the National Assembly for Wales in 1999 (Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru) Alun Michael was the top candidate of the Labor Party and was then on May 12, 1999 First Secretary and thus Chairman of the regional government. At the same time he was chairman of the Welsh Labor Party. On February 9, 2000, Rhodri Morgan succeeded him after his resignation in these offices. Between May 1999 and February 2000 he was also a member of the National Assembly for the constituency of Mid and West Wales .

In 2001 he was appointed Minister of State for Community Affairs and Local Environmental Quality in the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). After a cabinet reshuffle in 2005, he became Minister of State for Industry and Regions in the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). In May 2006 he was released in the course of a cabinet reshuffle.

In October 2012, Michael stepped down from the UK House of Commons to run for the Police and Crime Commissioner of the newly created South Wales Police Department. Here he was able to prevail in the election in mid-November 2012. In the by -election made necessary by Michael's resignation , Stephen Doughty was able to defend the constituency for Labor on the same day.
