Carwyn Howell Jones (born March 21, 1967 in Swansea ) is a Welsh politician of the Welsh Labor Party , from December 2009 to December 2018 he was First Minister of Wales .

Carwyn Jones studied law at Aberystwyth University . From 2000 he was Secretary of State with varying responsibilities in the Government of Wales. From 2007 to 2009 he was Counsel General, the state government's highest legal advisor. Following the announcement by Welsh First Minister Rhodri Morgan that he would be stepping down from his government and party positions in December 2009, three state MPs ran for his successor in the party chairmanship: Huw Lewis, Welsh Minister of Health and Welfare Edwina Hart and Carwyn Jones. The latter sat down on 1 December 2009 in a party vote by and was subsequently on 9 December, the new First Minister of Wales ( First Minister of Wales selected). In the May 1999 election to the National Assembly of Wales for the first time , Jones was elected as a member of the Bridgend constituency, and has been able to successfully defend this mandate since then.

On April 21, 2018, Jones announced his retirement from the post of First Minister and from the presidency of the state party for the fall of the year. Jones plans to step down as head of government on December 11, 2018, and his successor will be elected the following day. Mark Drakeford , Vaughan Gething and Eluned Morgan had applied for the party leadership . The election took place via a ballot of the party members, the result of which was known on December 6th. Here Drakeford prevailed in the runoff election. After the election by the Welsh National Assembly, Drakeford was sworn in as the new head of government on December 13th.

In addition to English, Carwyn Jones is also fluent in Welsh . As First Minister, he was entrusted with matters relating to the Welsh language ( Welsh Language Commissioner ).
