Michael James German, Baron German OBE (born May 8, 1945 in Cardiff , Wales ), best known as Mike German , is a British politician, former member of the National Assembly for Wales and member of the House of Lords .

Life

From an early age, Mike German was active in the Sea Scouts in Cardiff. He attended college in St. Illtyd, Welsh, and later St. Mary's University College in Twickenham, near London. After graduating from high school, he first began distance learning at the Open University and later at the University of the West of England . After completing his studies, he worked from 1966 to 1991 as a music teacher and honorary member of the school council (so-called school governor ). In 1991 he became the European Director of the Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC).

In addition to his work as a teacher, he began to be politically involved with the Liberal Democrats in his hometown Cardiff at an early age . From 1983 to 1996 he was parliamentary group leader of the Liberal Democrats in Cardiff, from 1987 to 1991 he was a member of the joint chairmanship of the Cardiffer City Council. In 1983 and 1987 he was one of the Liberal Democrats, who at the time were in favor of an alliance with the SDP . In the 1983 election, only 3,452 votes separated him from the election victory. In 1996 he was inducted into the Order of the British Empire as an officer . He was elected to the National Assembly of Wales in 1999 and re-elected in 2003 and 2007.

Under the coalition of Labor and Liberal Democrats in Wales, he was Deputy First Minister and Minister for Economics and Transport from 2000 to 2001 . Due to allegations of fraud in his work at the WJEC, he left his post as Deputy Minister from 2001 and was temporarily represented by Jenny Randerson . The allegations later turned out to be unfounded. From 2002 to 2003 he was Minister for Rural Affairs and the Wales Mission Abroad. In November 2007 to 2008 he followed Lembit Opik as chairman of the Liberal Democrats in Wales.

On June 24, 2010 he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron German , of Llanfrechfa in the County Borough of Torfaen , and has been a member of the House of Lords since then . Due to his entry into the House of Lords, he had to give up his mandate in the National Assembly, he was followed by his wife Veronica German as a member of parliament.
