The Wales Green Party (WGP, Welsh : Plaid Werdd Cymru ) is the only regional party with semi-autonomous status within the Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW). It covers Wales and contests the elections to the Welsh Parliament (formerly the National Assembly for Wales; as well as at local, UK and European level) and has its own newsletters, lists of members, annual meetings and manifestos. Members of the WGP are automatically members of the GPEW. Wales-wide decisions are made by the Wales Green Party Council , which is made up of the speakers, high-ranking party members and a representative from each local party.
history
The UK Greens have their roots in the Green Party called People, founded in 1973 . This became the Ecology Party three years later and in 1985 the Green Party. In 1990 the Scottish Green Party and the Green Party in Northern Ireland left the British Green Party and formed their own parties. The English and Welsh parties became the Green Party of England and Wales , with the Welsh Greens forming a semi-autonomous regional party (Wales Green Party).
In July 2018, the party voted on whether to separate from the GPEW and form a separate organization. Of the members who voted, 65% voted against the proposal, despite the fact that WGP chairman Grenville Ham fought for independence.
