- Berlin / Germany : Newborns with one parent who has been lawfully living in Germany for at least eight years and who has an unlimited right of residence are now Germans .
- Bern / Switzerland : The SVP politician Adolf Ogi , Federal President in 1993, takes over the office of Federal President for the second time. At the same time, the new federal constitution of the Swiss Confederation comes into force.
- Geneva / Switzerland : The Swiss Jakob Kellenberger takes over the office of President of the International Committee of the Red Cross from his compatriot Cornelio Sommaruga .
- Lisbon / Portugal : Portugal takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from Finland . The office of head of government of the EC is given to António Guterres .
- New York / United States : Bangladesh , Jamaica , Mali , Tunisia and Ukraine are new non-permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations .

- Bochum / Germany : In a residential area in the Wattenscheid district , the Höntroper Loch is created by a break in the daylight . There are two funnels with a depth of about 15 m, other sources report 40 m deep.

- Monaco / Monaco: Patrick Leclercq replaces Michel Lévêque as Minister of State .

- Bischofshofen / Austria : Andreas Widhölzl from Austria wins the 48th Four Hills Tournament ahead of defending champion Janne Ahonen from Finland .

- Belgium / Brussels : The small state of Monaco opens its own representation in the European Union .

- Tashkent / Uzbekistan : In the presidential election, over 91% of the votes cast are taken as a vote for incumbent President Islom Karimov by the People's Democratic Party .

- The Hague / Netherlands : In case IT-95-16-T, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia sentenced five ethnic Croats from Bosnia and Herzegovina to prison terms of up to 25 years for the Ahmići massacre in the Bosnian War on April 16, 1993. Another defendant is acquitted.

- Bonn / Germany : As a result of the CDU donation affair , the former Chancellor Helmut Kohl resigns from the party's honorary chairmanship at the request of the entire party leadership and after a one-to-one conversation with the CDU federal chairman Wolfgang Schäuble .
- United States : Martin Luther King Day , a national holiday in honor of civil rights activist Martin Luther Kings , is officially celebrated for the first time by all governments of the 50 states after South Carolina became the last missing state to participate.

- Quito / Ecuador : coup and overthrow of President Jamil Mahuad .

- Ratchaburi / Thailand : A special unit storms a hospital where members of the Karen ethnic group are holding 450 hostages. Ten rebels die in the attack. There are no fatalities among the hostages.

- Abidjan / Ivory Coast : When Kenya Airways flight 431 crashes , 169 people die.
- Atlanta / United States : Super Bowl XXXIV in American football between the St. Louis Rams and the Tennessee Titans ends at 11:16 pm.
- Baia Mare / Romania : The dam of the tailings facility of a gold mine breaks . Approx. 300,000 t of liquid, which u. a. are interspersed with cyanides , pour into the river Tisza and trigger an environmental catastrophe, life in the river Danube is also seriously endangered. Until the end of the day it was not possible to close the breach in the dam.

- Anacapa Island / United States : When Alaska Airlines flight 261 crashes , 88 people die. The machine crashes in the Pacific .
