- Germany , Philippines : The investment protection treaty between the two countries comes into force.
- Vaduz / Liechtenstein : The Principality ratifies the Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications in Higher Education in the European Region , with which higher education entrance qualifications and university degrees are mutually recognized in all contracting states.

- Düsseldorf / Germany : After a hostile takeover that lasted for months, the Supervisory Board of Mannesmann AG approves the offer from the British mobile communications service provider Vodafone Group , which will become the world's largest mobile communications provider with the acquisition of Mannesmann. The purchase price in shares is around 190 billion euros .
- Paris / France : On the first "World Summit against cancer" believe representatives of the World Health Organization , the Union for International Cancer Control ( German International Union Against Cancer ) and other organizations ten decisions for more effective measures against cancer disease control. The participants estimate that in the near future 20 million people will develop cancer each year.
- Vienna / Austria : Federal President Thomas Klestil praises the new federal government under Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel ( ÖVP ), while thousands of people protest against nationalism and racism in front of the Hofburg . For the first time, an Austrian government includes party members of the ÖVP and the FPÖ .

- Antarctica : A partial solar eclipse moves over the mainland around the South Pole .
- Berlin / Germany : The Federal Government declares the construction of the planned Transrapid - Maglev -distance between the German capital and Hamburg not to pursue. In recent months, Hartmut Mehdorn, as chairman of the board of directors of Deutsche Bahn AG, has called for a "improvement" to the state financial aid, otherwise his company could neither build nor maintain the line.

While the main venue of the festival has moved to the musical theater on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz , the traditional Zoo Palast is now the center of the Berlinale Children's Film Festival .

- Lagos / Nigeria : Co-hosts Nigeria narrowly lose the final of the 22nd Africa Cup of Nations against Cameroon . After 120 minutes the score is 2-2, in the penalty shoot-out Cameroon has the upper hand 4-3.

- Bamako / Mali : Mandé Sidibé becomes President.
- Brussels / Belgium : Negotiations begin with Bulgaria , Latvia , Lithuania , Malta , Romania and Slovakia to join the European Union .

- Berlin / Germany : Wolfgang Schäuble declares his resignation as party and parliamentary group chairman in front of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group.

- Redmond / United States : Microsoft releases the Windows 2000 operating system .

- Zagreb / Croatia : Stjepan Mesić becomes President.

- Berlin / Germany : The jury of the 50th Berlin International Film Festival honors the film Magnolia by director Paul Thomas Anderson as the best contribution of the festival with the Golden Bear .

- Hamburg / Germany : Gruner + Jahr starts an internet portal called Computer Channel . The company wants to achieve a market-defining position in online journalism with correspondents in Munich , Frankfurt am Main , London and San Francisco .
- Mendoza / Argentina : Soldiers of the armed forces of Argentina recovered wreckage of an airplane on the Tupungato volcano , which is very likely to be the remains of the passenger plane Star Dust , which disappeared in 1947 .

- Hanover / Germany : At CeBIT , Trek 2000 International presents a new technology for data storage : the USB stick .
- Los Angeles / United States : The winners of the 42nd Grammy Awards include Anne-Sophie Mutter , Thomas Quasthoff and the Berliner Philharmoniker . The Latin rock musician Carlos Santana receives eight awards.
- Maputo / Mozambique : Floods claim many hundreds of deaths.

- Cairo / Egypt : Pope John Paul II visits the al-Azhar University , which is considered to be the leading academic institution in Dār al-Islām . He sees his visit as an advertisement for more interreligious exchange.
- New York / United States : The UN Security Council approves the expansion of the peacekeeping mission in the Congo . In future, more than 5,500 blue helmet soldiers will monitor compliance with the ceasefire.

- Dushanbe / Tajikistan : parliamentary elections
- Kiel / Germany : Heide Simonis , who became the first woman to head a German state government in 1993, once again received the vote of confidence in the election in Schleswig-Holstein . Their party, the SPD , accounts for 43.1% and the following CDU for 35.2%. 6.2% opted for the Greens , coalition partners of the SPD.
