Computer Channel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Computer Channel was an internet portal by Gruner + Jahr that was founded as a GmbH in June 1999 at the height of the internet boom . The company started work with a large staff of permanent editors and, in addition to branches in Munich and Frankfurt am Main, had correspondent offices in the USA (San Francisco) and Great Britain (London).

After a test phase lasting several months, the portal was officially opened in February 2000 and for two years was one of the German-language offers with the greatest reach in this area. In addition to the journalistic section with the latest news and information on the topics of computers and the world of the Internet, the editorially managed download area was particularly popular. In 2001 the Computer Channel had 75 permanent employees.

Despite the high number of users, Gruner + Jahr closed the Internet portal in 2002 because it did not generate any profit. “The reason for the restructuring is the still low sales in e-commerce and online advertising, which are far below the expectations of Gruner + Jahr, according to the publisher” (Golem.de).
