- Moscow / Russia : The new President of Russia Vladimir Putin from the United Russia party , who emerged from a popular election in March , will be appointed to office in the Moscow Kremlin . Putin had been acting incumbent since December 1999 and in March 2000 ran as an independent candidate for the highest political office in Russia.

- Solihull / United Kingdom : After splitting off from the BMW Group , the car manufacturer MG Rover is created . Before the split, BMW sold the Land Rover brand to the Ford Motor Company .

- Enschede / Netherlands : Parts of the city are destroyed in an explosion in a fireworks factory.
- Stockholm / Sweden : The duo Olsen Brothers wins the final of the 45th Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson for Denmark in the “ Globenarena ” .
- Vatican City : Pope John Paul II sets off on a trip to the Portuguese village of Fátima to reveal the mystery of the apparition of Mary in 1917 . He also wants to speak to the 92-year-old alleged eyewitness Lúcia dos Santos .

- Düsseldorf / Germany : In the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia , the SPD lands with 42.8% of the vote, ahead of the CDU with 37% and the FDP with 9.8%. According to Prime Minister Wolfgang Clement , the red-green coalition is to be continued.
- Saint Petersburg / Russia : The Czech Republic becomes ice hockey world champion with a 5-3 win against Slovakia .

- Yerevan / Armenia : President Robert Kocharyan appoints Andranik Markarjan of the Republican Party as the new Prime Minister . His predecessor Aram Sarkissjan was in office until the beginning of the month.

- Ankara / Turkey : The independent judge Ahmet Necdet Sezer is sworn in as the tenth President of the Republic of Turkey .
- Vienna / Austria : In the Ernst Happel Stadium , the Grazer AK wins the ÖFB Cup final against SV Austria Salzburg 6-5 on penalties.

- Copenhagen / Denmark : Galatasaray SK Istanbul wins the football - UEFA Cup after a 4-1 on penalties in the final against Arsenal FC from London .
- Moscow / Russia : The lower house of the Federal Assembly elects the still provisional ruling in December 1999 by the then President Vladimir Putin without parliamentary election for prime minister nominated Mikhail Kasyanov officially as prime minister.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The end of the dot-com bubble means that the DAX share index has closed below the 7,000 point mark for the first time since mid-January. Since its peak in March, it has fallen by around 13%.
- Suva / Fiji : A coup involving the military against the government begins.

- Charlotte / United States : The film actor and president of the " National Rifle Association of America " (NRA) Charlton Heston thrilled the audience at the 129th meeting of the association when he waved a replica of a long gun over his head and explained that it would be given to him first “From his cold, dead hands”, with which he quotes an NRA slogan that has been in use for 30 years.
- Munich / Germany : FC Bayern Munich celebrates the German Football Championship 2000 after a 3-1 win against Werder Bremen . The team from Bayer 04 Leverkusen , which would have been enough to win the title with a draw, lost 2-0 against SpVgg Unterhaching .
- Taipei / Taiwan : Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party is sworn in as the new president . The ceremony marks a turning point, because all Taiwanese heads of state from May 20, 1948 until today belonged to the National People's Party of China .

- Cannes / France : The film Dancer in the Dark by Danish director Lars von Trier with singer Björk Guðmundsdóttir in the lead role is awarded the Palme d'or at the 53rd International Film Festival .
- Geneva / Switzerland : With three match days remaining, FC St. Gallen is prematurely confirmed as the 2000 Swiss football champions due to the tie of runner-up FC Basel at Servette FC Geneva . The St. Gallen team won their last game 2-1 against FC Luzern .

- Brussels / Belgium : With the signature of Foreign Minister Tonino Picula , Croatia is accepted into the Partnership for Peace ( German partnership for peace ) between the military alliance NATO and predominantly non-aligned countries.
- Southern Lebanon : Israel withdraws its military forces from the neighboring country and ends the occupation.

- Innsbruck / Austria : FC Tirol Innsbruck becomes Austrian football champions 2000 .
- Skopje / Macedonia : In the Champions League in women's handball , the players from Hypo Niederösterreich secure the title of European championship champion with a 22:20 win in the final second leg against the Kometal Gjorče Petrov Skopje club .
