The Fiji Times is an English-language daily newspaper, with a part in the Fiji language , published in the capital Suva , Fiji .
history
The Fiji Times was founded on September 4th 1869 by George Littleton Griffiths (* 1844 Woolwich, England - 1908 Suva, Fiji) in Levuka and is the oldest newspaper in Fiji that is still published. It claims to be the first newspaper in the world with a daily edition.
The newspaper is owned by Mahendra Motibhai Patel , who bought it from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp in 2010 . Former editor Evan Hannah was expelled from Fiji in 2008 on charges of political meddling by the interim government .
Military coups and censorship
The newspaper was temporarily censored by the Sitiveni Rabuka administration after the military coup in 1987 . In protest, an edition was issued that had white areas instead of the censored articles. Following the coup against the civilian government in December 2006, the newspaper announced that it would rather not publish a newspaper than bow to state censorship. From December 2006 to April 2009, the Times was able to publish critical articles about the interim government. After the constitutional crisis of 2009, all newspapers in Fiji were censored.

The Fiji Labor Party is a strong and constant critic of the politically center-right Fiji Times , accusing it of political bias.
