Hypo Niederösterreich is a women's handball club from Maria Enzersdorf in Lower Austria . He is one of the most successful clubs in Europe . Between 1989 and 2000, Hypo won the EHF Champions League eight times . The home games are played in the Maria Enzersdorf district of Südstadt.

history

The club was originally founded by a number of successful track and field athletes, including Liese Prokop , Maria Sykora and Eva Janko , together with coach Gunnar Prokop . After a few years, Hypo caught up with the top Austrian women's handball teams at the time and became champions for the first time in 1977. Then they dominated the Austrian league and became Austrian champions 42 times without interruption. Hypo won the ÖHB Cup , introduced in the 1989/90 season, a total of 30 times.

In the 1980s, Gunnar Prokop built an ever-improving women's team, which made it to the final in the Champions League for the first time in 1987. There, however, Spartak Kiev initially clearly indicated the limits. In 1988 the final against Spartak Kiev was again narrowly lost, but this time the Lower Austrians were equal. In the following year, the first Champions League win was against the same opponent; In 1990 the title was successfully defended against Kuban Krasnodar in the final.

In 1991 the final was lost against TV Lützellinden , the successful revenge on the Giesseners followed in the final of the following year. Until 1995 followed by the Norwegian coach Arne Högdahl three more European Cup titles in a row.

The following year the Hypo women lost the title to ŽRK Podravka Koprivnica . After that they were denied the final, but in 1998 they won the championship again against the Spanish top club Mar Valencia . In 2000, the EHF championship trophy was brought to the southern part of the city for the last time against Kometal Gjorče Petrov Skopje . The Lower Austrians won the home game very clearly and were not disturbed by the crowd riots in the second leg.

After that, the squad fell apart and times were less successful for Hypo. In the next three seasons, the Lower Austrians only finished third in the group stage and were eliminated from the Champions League. In the spring of 2004, Hypo continued to play in the European Cup Winners' Cup and reached the final, which was lost to the Danish club Ikast-Bording Elite Håndbold with an away debacle .

The management was slowly able to strengthen its team. In the 2004/05 season Hypo came back to the semi-finals, where it failed to Kometal Skopje. 2005/06 was already in the quarter-finals against Aalborg DH . In spring 2007 at least the semifinals were reached again, there came the end against GK Lada Tolyatti .

Manager Prokop reacted and rebuilt the team again. Coach Ryan Zinglersen, who trained Hypo from the 2004/05 season, was replaced by the Hungarian team coach Andras Nemeth from the 2007/08 season. The reinforcements are obviously paying off, Hypo Niederösterreich mastered both group phases of the 2007/08 season against very strong opponents with confidence and without losing points. In the 13th Champions League game of the season there was the first defeat of the season in the away game at Lada Tolyatti. But this was equalized in the home game and thus the promotion to the final was made. There Hypo Niederösterreich met another Russian representative, Zvezda Zvenigorod , who had already been defeated twice in the second group phase. But it shouldn't work: The Lower Austrians narrowly lost both games. The following season, Hypo made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League, but clearly failed because of Győri ETO KC . Some top performers left the team in the summer.

The 2009/10 season turned into a crisis situation within a few weeks after a convincing first win in the group stage against Aalborg. Hypo only drew 27:27 against Metz Handball in the second round; Gunnar Prokop ran onto the field seven seconds before the end of the game and stopped a French player with a bump. Two days later he resigned from his coaching position. The EHF pronounced the following penalty: 45,000 euros fine for Gunnar Prokop and a three-year ban for all international competitions. The club received a € 30,000 fine, the point from the draw against Metz was deducted, but the French representative was not awarded. Hypo appealed the judgment in due time. After Gunnar Prokop resigned, Christian Maly took over as coach in November 2009. But after Hypo slipped into a debacle a week later in Ljubljana, he was dismissed after just six days in office. Then Oh Seong-ok was player-coach until the end of the season, and soon she was appointed head coach Martin Matuschkowitz, who then continued to train the combat team. Ferenc Kovács acted as co-trainer , who has also coached the older youth classes and the two-man Hypo team playing in the WHA league for years. (Source: news on the Hypo website or orf.at)

The appeal hearing in January 2010 brought considerable penalties for Hypo and Gunnar Prokop: the fine against Gunnar Prokop was reduced to 10,000 euros and his ban was reduced to one year. The pronounced ban on EHF offices for life has been withdrawn. The fine against the Hypo Niederösterreich association was waived, only the point deduction remained in place. In the last round of the regular season, Hypo narrowly won the home game against Krim Laibach and made it into the main round. There it was over, it was enough for third place.

On June 30, 2010 there was a final falling out between the Hypo Niederösterreich association and Gunnar Prokop. Prokop wanted to sign three new legionnaires from Denmark, but the board ultimately rejected its plans for the 2010/11 season and decided to fill the positions on the fighting team that had become vacant due to the departure of some players by young Austrians. On July 1, Prokop resigned from his position and left the association by mutual agreement. His successor was the previous Secretary General Dieter Heger. Since the 2010/11 season, the club has been represented by two teams in Women Handball Austria . This season, the club tried to bring more young Austrians to use. There were also many injuries; In the basic round of the Champions League, Hypo finished third, continued to play in the cup winners' competition and was eliminated there against Metz Handball .

For the 2011/12 season Andras Nemeth, who had previously worked in Vac, was hired as a coach. The club entered into a cooperation with the Brazilian handball association in the summer of 2011. The team was completely rebuilt, five new Brazilians came. Coach Nemeth brought two Hungarians with him from his previous club Vac. Although the squad was stronger than in the previous season, Hypo was eliminated from the Champions League after the group stage. In February 2012, manager Dieter Heger announced the end of his employment relationship with Hypo Niederösterreich (source: NÖN of February 22, 2012). On May 11, 2013, Hypo won the European Cup Winners' Cup . For coach Andras Nemeth it was the farewell to Hypo, he retired after this season. After some searching, Hypo came to an agreement with the Dane Morten Soubak, who also looks after the Brazilian national team.

The 2013/14 season was not very successful for Hypo Niederösterreich. The departure of playmaker Bernadett Temes could not be fully compensated. In the Champions League, the Südstadt women suffered a historic 22:41 defeat in Győr. Although they had the chance of promotion up to the last round of the group phase, after a 25:34 defeat at HC Thuringia in round six, it was only third place again. At the end of the season the team fell apart: Captain Alexandra do Nascimento and goalkeeper Bárbara Arenhart signed with the Romanian club HCM Baia Mare. The Brazilian association ended the cooperation with Hypo Niederösterreich, most of the Brazilian players left the southern part of the city. Coach Soubak returned to Brazil after just one season. In the quarter-finals of the EHF European Cup Winners' Cup 2013/14 , Hypo played both games against Byåsen IL in Trondheim, after a 30:29 win in the first game, the second game was lost 23:37. The board decided to go in a new direction: in the future, a powerful squad will be formed primarily with Austrian players. The line is dictated by a tight financial framework.

Since the 2014/15 season, Ferenc Kovács has been the head coach on the sidelines again, while Martin Matuschkowitz is co-trainer. In March 2016, a personal rogue was carried out: Martin Matuschkowitz rose to the position of head coach of the Hypo combat team, Ferenc Kovács once again acts as assistant trainer (who he was with Martin Soubak) and took over responsibility for the junior division. In the summer of 2016, a change in the mode of the WHA came into force, due to which the second team from Hypo Niederösterreich is no longer eligible to play in the top division.

In April 2017, Hypo Niederösterreich suffered a historic 17:18 defeat in the cup final against the Viennese club MGA-Fivers and thus failed to win the "double" for the first time in 29 years. In the following year, the Südstadt women clearly failed in the Cup quarter-finals against UHC Stockerau. After winning 42 championship titles in a row, Hypo lost the championship final against WAT Atzgersdorf in the 2018/19 season .
