The men's team celebrated its greatest successes towards the end of the 1980s when they became three Hungarian champions and won the IHF Cup in 1986. In the women's team, the breakthrough came in the new millennium; they won the Hungarian championship in 2005, 2006 and 2008 and made it to the semi-finals of the EHF Champions League in 2007 and 2008 and to the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 2006. Győri won the Champions League for the first time in the 2012/13 season. In the following season, the team defended this title.
