With good performances he recommended himself for the Spanish league ASOBAL , so that in 1999 he moved to Bidasoa Irún . After a first interlude at BM Ciudad Real in the 2000/01 season, he went to THW Kiel in the German handball league in 2001 . Here he won the German championship and the EHF Cup in 2002 . After only one season he returned to Spain and hired at BM Valladolid , where he won the Copa ASOBAL in 2003 and the Copa del Rey de Balonmano in 2005; he was also the top scorer of the league ASOBAL in the 2004/05 season . With this recommendation, he returned to BM Ciudad Real in 2005. Here he won the Copa ASOBAL, the EHF Champions League and the European Club Championship in 2006 and the championship in 2007. In the 2006/07 season, Fis suffered from a persistent injury to his left knee, had to be operated on three times and was out of the league almost completely. Therefore, from the summer of 2007, he and his teammate Ion Belaustegui were on loan to CB Ciudad de Logroño for two years in order to regain his old form. However, since he could not overcome his knee pain, he withdrew from active sports in the summer of 2008.

Julio Fis played 28 international matches for the Cuban national team . With Cuba he was two pan-American and Central American champions and took part in the 1997 and 1999 world championships. In the spring of 2005 he also took on Spanish citizenship. With the Spanish national team , he won silver at the 2006 European Handball Championship . He was absent from the 2007 handball world championship in Germany due to his knee injury.
