Ivo Luis Díaz Aldazabal (born May 10, 1972 in Matanzas , Cuba ) is a Cuban handball player who has also had Hungarian citizenship since 1999. He has played for both the Cuban and Hungarian national teams. He is currently active at the Hungarian club Tatabánya KC and is mostly used on the back center .
Ivo Díaz began his career as a competitive athlete in the selection of the city of Varadero, located in his home province of Matanzas . He later rose to the national team and moved to the capital, Havana . At the men's handball world championship in 1997 , Díaz fell on the manager of the Hungarian top club MKB Veszprém . The responsible Cuban federation sensed the chance to have several local players trained professionally in Europe and only let Díaz move on the condition that nine other Cubans, including Carlos Pérez , Rolando Uríos and Julio Fis , also had contracts in Hungary received. First, however, Díaz played for Pécsi MKC for two years, only then did he go to MKB Veszprém . During his time in Veszprém he won the Hungarian championship in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 and the Hungarian Cup in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. In 2002 he was in the final of the EHF Champions League with the men from Lake Balaton , but failed because of the SC Magdeburg Gladiators . After six years in Veszprém, Díaz decided in 2005 to move to the Spanish top club Ademar León . There he could not really assert himself, so he went to JD Arrate in 2006 . He has been back in Hungary since 2009, for the first division team Tatabánya KC.
Ivo Díaz had already played 83 international matches for the Cuban men's national handball team by 2003 . With Cuba he finished ninth in the 1999 men's handball world championship .
In 1999, Díaz took on Hungarian citizenship; since 2003 he has played over 30 international matches for the Hungarian men's national handball team . With Hungary he finished 6th at the men's handball world championship in 2003 , 9th place at the 2004 European handball championship and 4th place at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He also took part in the men's handball world championship in Germany in 2007 with Hungary, but ended up only ninth.
In June 2014, at the age of 42, he was selected by experts from the IHF , the world handball association, in a world selection that played a charity game against the Egyptian national team in Cairo .
