Zvezda Zvenigorod ( Russian Звезда Звенигород , scientific. Transliteration Zvezda Zvenigorod , dt. "Star Zvenigorod" ) is a Russian women's Handball Club of Zvenigorod , a suburb of Moscow .

history

The club was only founded in 2002 at the suggestion of the Russian Association from the Retort, presumably with the intention that a club from Moscow Oblast should be the future center of Russian women's handball. In contrast to other Eastern European sports clubs with the word "star" in their name (e.g. Steaua Bucharest or Red Star Belgrade ), Zvezda Zvenigorod has no reference to the army . After a year in the lower-class game operation, the club rose in 2003 to the highest Russian league in women's handball, the Super League. In the first season they finished third, but the clear goal of the club management was the championship, so that in the summer of 2005 the star player Jelena Poljonowa was signed. In 2006 the club took another big step back: the previous trainer of the series champion GK Lada Tolyatti , Yevgeni Trefilow , also the trainer of the Russian women's national team , as well as the players Oxana Romenskaja and Natalja Schipilowa . In 2007 the team broke through the supremacy of GK Lada Tolyatti and became champions. In the same year they won the EHF Cup .

In the Champions League 2007/08 Zvenigorod survived the group stage as group winners and was in the main round. There they got ahead due to the better game results compared to the same points Viborg HK . In the semifinals, Zvezda prevailed despite a narrow home defeat against Győri Audi ETO KC . Zvezda Zvenigorod won the two finals against Hypo Niederösterreich . However, both finals of the 2008 Russian championship were narrowly lost against Lada Tolyatti and the Russian title could not be defended.

The 2008/09 season, however, turned into a disaster for Zvezda Zvenigorod. In the Champions League, the team finished last in the group stage and was eliminated. In addition, there were financial problems. At the championship final of the season against GK Dynamo Volgograd there was a scandal: the game there were brutal fouls on both sides. Shortly before the final siren, two attacks by Zvezda players against the opponent's face triggered a fight between the two teams, in which the supervisors intervened. Zvezda lost the championship final for the second time.

In the EHF Champions League, the Russians stood out a few times because of their extremely tough, sometimes unfair style of play.
