There were thirty-three candidates; 15 of them submitted applications to the Central Electoral Commission of the Russian Federation ; twelve of them were registered. One of the 12 resigned shortly before the deadline; 11 candidates took part in the election.

Putin's campaign team said Putin will not participate in televised debates and will not use the free time radio stations and television stations made available to all candidates. Nevertheless, Putin was often seen and heard on news broadcasts as part of general reporting during the period of the election campaign.
