- Los Angeles / United States : In the 72nd ceremony of the Academy Awards of the American film industry to get the movies American Beauty of the British director Sam Mendes with five awards and matrix of American directors Larry and Andy Wachowski with four awards, most "Oscar" trophies.
- Moscow / Russia : In the first presidential election after the term of office of the first President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin , almost 40 million or 52.94% of the electorate decided for the provisional incumbent Vladimir Putin from the United Russia party , who ran as an independent candidate.
