- Moscow / Russia : In the first presidential election after the term of office of the first President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin , almost 40 million or 52.94% of the electorate decided for the provisional incumbent Vladimir Putin from the United Russia party , who ran as an independent candidate.
