history

It was founded in 1964 as an international non-profit journalists' association by the Italian journalist Roberto Savio and the Argentine political scientist Pablo Piacentini. The initial goal of IPS was to fill the "information gap " between Europe and Latin America that opened up following the Cuban Revolution of 1959.

Organization and financing

There are regional offices: Montevideo (regional office for Latin America ), Berlin - London ( Europe and Mediterranean ), New Delhi ( Asia and Pacific ), New York ( North America and the Caribbean ) and Johannesburg ( Africa ). Most journalists report from their home country.

IPS is financed by media clients, as recipients of multilateral and international development cooperation programs and by project financing from foundations . According to Rauch, IPS is roughly the sixth largest international intelligence service.

services

All kinds of media as well as civil society and UN organizations are subscribers to IPS. In addition, there are numerous individuals who receive the free news service on the Internet in English and Spanish and in translation into ten other languages, namely Arabic, German, Finnish, French, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish and Swahili.

In addition, IPS publishes a newsletter during certain major events such as UN conferences or the World Social Forum . In addition to the news service, IPS offers training for journalists and maintains project partnerships with civil society organizations and social movements .

rating

IPS currently only occupies a marginal position in the international media landscape. Reasons for this include a .:

  1. the limited financial resources;
  2. the low number of correspondents (in many countries IPS only employs freelancers);
  3. Lack of financial and human resources to report adequately on all regions and topics and to deliver timely news and follow-up reports;
  4. the fact that the emphasis on background information is not particularly attractive to the market-driven commercial media (Giffard, 1998: 200).

In 2005 Inter Press Service was awarded the Alternative Media Prize.
