NGC 4314 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is an estimated 43 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter. Together with 18 other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4274 group ( LGG 279 ).
Inside the galaxy, a ring about 1,000 light years in radius consists of very young stars about 5 million years old . Can be recognized by the blue color on the picture of Hubble. This is rather unusual as the star formation areas are usually in the spiral arms .

The object was discovered on March 13, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
