NGC 4291 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E2 in the constellation Dragon in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 85 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 4319 , it forms an (optical?) Pair of galaxies. It is a member of the eleven galaxies NGC 4589 group ( LGG 284 ).
The galaxies NGC 4331 and NGC 4363 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on December 10, 1797 .
