NGC 4268 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 87 million light years from the Milky Way . It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VVC 371 .

Together with NGC 4259 , NGC 4270 , NGC 4273 , NGC 4277 , NGC 4281 and IC 3153 , it forms the galaxy group Holm 368 .

The object was discovered by Eduard Schönfeld on April 1, 1862 .
