NGC 4251 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is an estimated 47 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years in diameter. Together with 18 other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4274 group ( LGG 279 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4211 , IC 777 , IC 3165 , IC 3168 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 11, 1785 .
