NGC 4248 is an irregular galaxy of Hubble type IBm with extensive star formation in the constellation of hounds on the northern sky . It is estimated to be 24 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light-years across. Together with Messier 106 , it forms the galaxy pair Holm 363 and is considered a member of the NGC 4258 group ( LGG 290 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4217 , NGC 4226 , NGC 4231 , NGC 4232 .
The object was discovered by William Herschel on February 9, 1788 .
