NGC 4249 is a Lenticular Galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 113 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light-years across. The galaxy is listed under catalog number VCC 266 as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4252 , NGC 4257 , NGC 4259 , NGC 4261 .
The object was discovered by Albert Marth on May 26, 1864 .
