NGC 4259 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 108 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is listed under catalog number VVC 342 as part of the Virgo galaxy cluster .
Together with NGC 4268 , NGC 4270 , NGC 4273 , NGC 4277 , NGC 4281 and IC 3153 , it forms the galaxy group Holm 368 .

The object was discovered by John Herschel on December 27, 1827 .
