NGC 4253 is a bar-shaped spiral galaxy with an active galaxy core of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is an estimated 173 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4245 , NGC 4272 , NGC 4274 , IC 779 .
The object was discovered on February 3, 1788 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel using his 18.7 inch telescope.
