Time Fades Away is a live album by Neil Young released by Reprise Records in 1973 .

background

The recordings were made during Young's 90-day tour following the very successful release of Harvest . Time Fades Away comes from his so-called "Ditch Period" or "Doom Period", consisting of the album and the two releases On the Beach and Tonight's the Night . The music of this time is characterized by a dark and desperate undertone, among other things triggered by the death of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten , with whom Young was long friends, in 1972. Time Fades Away consists exclusively of previously unreleased material. A poster with the lyrics was included with the album. There was no new edition as CD.

reception

  • The music journalist Robert Christgau judged that Time Fades Away is not a hopeless throwaway product or a hasty live album. Young's backing band Stray Gators supported him as well as Crazy Horse could have. Christgau awarded an A.
  • Mark Deming wrote on Allmusic that the album shows the difficult zeitgeist of the USA of the 1970s in a way that few rock musicians dared. Some of the songs are the most powerful performances that Young ever recorded on vinyl. The evaluation was Time Fades Away four out of five stars.
  • For Rolling Stone , Bud Scoppa summed up that Time Fades Away is not the standard live album of a successful artist and that there are some mistakes in the performance, so that Young made a startlingly unorthodox album here - a peculiarity of one of the most peculiar rock artists. And if the recordings hadn't been a resounding success, Time Fades Away would still be a meaningful self-portrait of a fascinating person.
