(1969)

Neil Young is the debut album by Canadian rock musician Neil Young . It was released on Reprise Records in November 1968 .

background

After Buffalo Springfield split in the spring of 1968, Neil Young prepared for a solo career. The recordings for his debut took place between August and October 1968 and led to the release of the album in November. The record company subjected the sound recordings to the Haeco-CSG process of that time, which was supposed to prevent compatibility problems between stereo and mono technology. Young was dissatisfied with the result, so after the album was released it was mixed again.

On the back of the record cover there are so-called sleeve notes by the artist. The painted picture on the cover was designed by Roland Diehl. In the first edition it took up the entire front, while in later pressings of the album the signature Neil Young was inserted in the upper quarter .

Chart success

When it was released, Neil Young was a flop - and it was the only Neil Young album without chart success. The single The Loner missed the Billboard Hot 100 .

occupation

reception

  • At Allmusic , William Ruhlmann wrote that Young sang in a quiet, high-pitched tenor because of his uncertainty about his voice. On The Loner the guitar cracks can already be heard, which would later characterize Young's work with Crazy Horse . In the rating, the debut album received three and a half stars out of five.
  • In Rolling Stone , Gary von Tersch wrote that Neil Young could easily be seen as an extension of Young's former band Buffalo Springfield, like an album Buffalo Springfield Again . Young's sense of melancholy is very clear.
  • Mark Richardson wrote on the music website Pitchfork Media that the album was the one that sounded least like Young. The artist sounds strangely hesitant, as if he doesn't know what his music should sound like. The album received 7.8 points in the rating.
