Buffalo Springfield was an American - Canadian folk or country rock band from Los Angeles , who released three albums from 1966 to 1968.

Band history

The two guitarists Neil Young and Stephen Stills met in 1963, when each was traveling with their own group in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

In the spring of 1966 the band formed in Los Angeles, and numerous legends have formed around the (accidental) reunion of Stills and Young in a traffic jam on Sunset Boulevard.

Initially, all tracks were written by Stills and Young, with Richie Furay (rhythm guitar) taking over the vocals on Young's pieces. The band name was taken from a Buffalo-Springfield Roller Company steamroller that stood in front of the house where Stills and Furay lived.

The first single, For What It's Worth , written by Stephen Stills, was the band's only hit and reached number 7 on the US charts; the first album Buffalo Springfield, however, was not very successful.

With new management, the band worked on the second album Buffalo Springfield Again . Bruce Palmer was sent to jail for drug possession. His replacement Jim Fielder soon left the group to join Blood, Sweat & Tears . From now on the band began to fall apart. With songs by Furay, Young, and Stills, Buffalo Springfield Again became another respectable hit. However, the question arose more and more whether the band still existed at all.

Without Young, the band played at the Monterey Pop Festival , with David Crosby as a replacement. It was followed by more live performances up to the farewell concert in Los Angeles. Jim Messina , the group's bassist at the time, produced the last album Last Time Around . When it came out in 1968, Buffalo Springfield was already gone.

Young's solo career had already begun at this point. Stills formed the band Crosby, Stills and Nash with Crosby and Graham Nash . Furay and Messina founded Poco . After two solo albums by Young, Stills convinced him to join Crosby, Stills & Nash , which then became Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young .

In 1997 Buffalo Springfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .

Reunion

On October 23 and 24, 2010, Buffalo Springfield played live for the first time since their split. On the occasion of the annual Bridge School Benefit in favor of disabled children, they performed on both festival evenings at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View (California). The three original members, Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, who are still alive, played an approximately forty-minute semi-acoustic set of classics from the band's history. The late Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin were replaced by Rick Rosas (bass) and Joe Vitale (drums).

meaning

Buffalo Springfields For What It's Worth (1967) is considered a great classic in rock history. It was voted number 63 of the "500 best songs of all time" by Rolling Stone , experienced countless cover versions and - due to the distinctive guitar parts of Stills - arrangements and found a soundtrack from Lord of War - dealer of death , Tropic Thunder , Forrest Gump, among others and Spike Lee's Game of Life Use. The piece is still part of the live repertoire of Stephen Stills and Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) .
