Mirror Ball is a studio album by Neil Young , on which the band Pearl Jam played. It was released on Reprise Records in June 1995 . In 1996 it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album .

Emergence

The album was recorded in January and February 1995 at Bad Animals Studios in Seattle . The producer was Brendan O'Brien , who was responsible for the two previous Pearl Jam albums. The album was recorded in four days of studio time, and some songs were only written during this time. Among others, Act of Love , which Young had already played live in January, and Song X Young had already worked out. Young said: “Recording Mirror Ball was like audio vérité, just a snapshot of what's happening. Sometimes I didn't know who was playing. I was just conscious of this big smouldering mass of sound. " ("Recording Mirror Ball was like audio vérité , like a snapshot of what was happening. Sometimes I didn't know who was playing. I was just aware of that big, glowing mass of sound.") Vedder wasn't doing the recordings very often present, as he was followed by stalkers at the time and he could hardly leave the house.

The two songs I Got Id and Long Road were not included on the album as outtakes. They were released on Pearl Jam's EP Merkin Ball in late 1995 .

reception

The album reached number five on the Billboard 200 and number eight in Germany. William Ruhlmann of Allmusic wrote that Neil Young “used” Pearl Jam in a similar way to his companion band Crazy Horse to convey emotion and spontaneity. Pearl Jam also brings "inspired rhythms and dense guitar playing" with. The mixture is "always interesting", even if nothing new is offered in terms of the text. It awarded three out of five stars. Robert Christgau only dedicated one sentence to the album: "Baby, he was born to lumber - and Pearl Jam wasn't." (“He was born to tumble away - and Pearl Jam wasn't.”) In the intro , the reviewer wrote that Young would have made the record without Pearl Jam, but it would “not have turned out so well”. With a view to the death of Kurt Cobain , the conclusion was: "Here two generations who have been stolen from a prophet have found a way to rock together in their spirit."
