Bennett Keith Schaeufele (born March 6, 1937 in Fort Riley , Kansas , † July 26, 2010 in La Honda , California ), better known by his stage name Ben Keith , was an American musician and record producer . The multi-instrumentalist was best known for his almost four decades of bridging collaboration with Neil Young .

biography

Born in Fort Riley, Ben Keith grew up in Bowling Green , Kentucky . From the mid-1950s he played as a session musician in Nashville , Tennessee . He was a sought-after guitarist, his favorite instrument was the Hawaiian guitar .

In 1971 Keith became a member of the "Stray Gators" with whom Neil Young recorded the album Harvest . The collaboration between the two would last for almost four decades until the death of Ben Keith.

Keith has also worked with many other well-known musicians, including Terry Reid , Todd Rundgren , Lonnie Mack , The Band , David Crosby , Graham Nash , Paul Butterfield , JJ Cale , Linda Ronstadt , Warren Zevon , Ian and Sylvia , Emmylou Harris , Willie Nelson , Waylon Jennings , Anne Murray and Ringo Starr . Keith also produced Jewel's debut album , Pieces of You (1995), and recorded two solo albums (1984 and 1994). In 2006 he went on tour again with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young .

While working on a project with Neil Young, he died at the age of 73 on his ranch.
