Terry Reid (born November 13, 1949 in Huntingdon , Cambridgeshire ) is an English rock singer and guitarist.

Career

When he was twelve, Terry Reid was the singer in a school band called The Redbeats . When he was 15, Peter Jay discovered him and took him on a short tour of England as the singer of his Jaywalkers . Then they went to the studio to record songs. However, the single became a failure and the Jaywalkers broke up.

Reid then formed his own band and found a supporter in producer Mickie Most who gave him a record deal with his label. His debut album Bang, Bang, You're Terry Reid was released in the USA in 1968 and reached number 153. In Europe, however, it was not released.

When label colleagues John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page asked shortly afterwards if he wanted to become the singer of their band, he declined because of planned tours. He played as a solo musician in the opening act of the successful US tour of the Rolling Stones . However, he recommended John Bonham and Robert Plant to them in his place . As Led Zeppelin, the four musicians became one of the most successful rock bands of all time. Reid also turned down an offer that same year to join Rod Evans at Deep Purple .

In the meantime Reid had finished his second album. Mickie Most mixed it up on his own terms, which Reid disagreed with at all. It came to a falling out, but because of the existing contract he could not release any more albums without Most. The attempt to circumvent the contract by changing citizenship thwarted Most by preventing another label from accepting him through his influence. So Reid had to wait until 1973 before he could release his third album River . Although it received good reviews, it did not get above the placements of its two predecessors in the US charts.

In the next few years Terry Reid worked as a studio musician for country musicians Bonnie Raitt and Hoyt Axton, among others . In 1976 he took up an album again called Seed of Memory . The producer was Graham Nash . The album sounded more like Nash than early Reid and was a flop. The following Rogue Waves could not arouse any new interest despite its rockier sounds. After that, three more albums appeared at large intervals, none of which made it into the charts.
