NGC 4257 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sab in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 119 million light years from the Milky Way . The galaxy is listed under catalog number VVC 323 as part of the Virgo galaxy cluster . The object was discovered by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest on April 21, 1862 .
