NGC 4281 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 116 million light years from the Milky Way and about 105,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is considered a member of the NGC 4235 group ( LGG 281 ) and is listed under catalog number VVC 408 as part of the Virgo galaxy cluster .
Together with NGC 4259 , NGC 4268 , NGC 4270 , NGC 4273 , NGC 4277 and IC 3153 , it forms the galaxy group Holm 368 .

The object was discovered on April 17, 1786 by the astronomer William Herschel using his 18.7 inch reflector telescope.
