NGC 4301 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . The galaxy is estimated to be 53 million light years from the Milky Way and about 25,000 light years across . She is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 552 . Together with Messier 61 , it forms the galaxy pair Holm 379 . The galaxies NGC 4292 , NGC 4303 , NGC 4324 , NGC 4378 are located in the same area of ​​the sky .

The object was discovered by Bindon Blood Stoney on April 21, 1851 .
