NGC 4309 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0-a in the constellation Virgo in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 36 million light years from the Milky Way . The galaxy is listed under catalog number VVC 524 as part of the Virgo galaxy cluster .
The object was discovered in 1881 by Christian August Friedrich Peters .
