NGC 4302 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type Sc with an active galaxy core in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is around 49 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 80,000 light years . Together with NGC 4298 , it forms the strongly gravitationally bound galaxy pair Holm 377 or KPG 332 . It is registered as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 497 .

In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4262 , IC 781 , IC 3177 , IC 3238 and IC 3244 , a few degrees east the three giant galaxies M87, M89 and M90, whose gravity dominates the dynamics of the galaxy cluster.

The Type IIL supernova SN 1986E was observed here.

The object was discovered on April 8, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel .
