NGC 4278 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 28 million light years from the Milky Way and about 30,000 light years across. With NGC 4283 it forms the (optical?) Galaxy pair Holm 369 . Together with 18 other galaxies, it belongs to the NGC 4274 group ( LGG 279 ) and is considered a member of the Coma galaxy cluster .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4274 , NGC 4286 , NGC 4310 , NGC 4338 .

The object was discovered by William Herschel on March 13, 1785 .
