NGC 4296 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Virgo in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 180 million light years from the Milky Way . It probably forms an interacting pair with NGC 4297 . It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 475 .
The object was discovered on April 13, 1784 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
