NGC 4285 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 337 million light years from the Milky Way and about 90,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies NGC 4279 and NGC 4263 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on May 6, 1886 .
